ENDODONTIC PROCEDURES include the following:
A. Root Canal Treatment - This treatment refers to the removal of pulpal tissue (nerves, blood vessels, etc.) from within the root canals of teeth. Every tooth has one or more roots and root canals are found within these teeth.
B. Root Canal Retreatment - This treatment involves removal of root filling materials which allow dentists to reclean the root canal system when the original root canal treatment outcome was unsuccessful.
C. Surgical Treatment - Endodontic surgery is performed to remove diseased tissue associated with teeth and which could not be removed by root canal treatment alone. Surgical treatment often involves removal of a root tip, placement of a root end filling, and removal of any diseased tissue associated with the root tip. Terminology associated with endodontic surgery is as follows:
1. Apical Curettage - This procedure involves cleaning the root ends.
2. Apicoectomy and retrograde filling - This procedure includes removal of a segment of the root end and placement of a root end filling.
3. Trephination - This procedure refers to making a hole in the bone (osseous tissues) to relieve pressure and to establish drainage.
4. Incision and drainage - This procedure refers to incising the soft tissues (gingival tissues) to relieve pressure.
5. Intentional Replantation - This procedure involves replanting a tooth which has been removed from the socket in the alveolar arch (jaw bone). Some teeth are avulsed (dislodged completely) when traumatic injuries occur. Other teeth are intentionally removed and replaced.
6. Transplantation - This procedure involves removal of a tooth from one area and placing it into another area of the dental arches.
D. Apexification, Apexogenesis, Revitalization - These procedures are performed on teeth which have roots that have not developed fully. The purpose of the treatment is to attempt to have the root mature or in other words, grow in 3 dimensions.
E. Trauma - A variety of traumatic injuries occurs and each type requires special treatment. The following is a list of types of injuries experienced and treated.
1. Concussion Injury
2. Luxation Injury
3. Enamel Fracture
4. Enamel and Dentin Fracture
5. Enamel and Dentin Fracture involving the nerve
6. Enamel, Dentin and Root Fracture with/without involvement of the nerve
7. Root Fracture - Horizontal / Oblique
8. Avulsion
F. Bleaching Teeth - This procedure is performed when teeth discolor due to traumatic injuries which adversely affect the pulp of the tooth. Changes in tooth color range from red to yellow. These colors can often be reversed within a few weeks.
